Web design principles

One does not need a degree in web designing to design a web. Following the four basic principles of web design, alignment, proximity, repetition and contrast can help an individual design a web page that is comprehendible by his/her audience. The four principles of web design helps to provide a professional and clean appearance to a web page. The audience will be able to identify the web page’s purpose and navigate through the page more conveniently.

Alignment is the biggest problem when it comes to web design. Most people try to make their web page look different by adding text or images all over their page. They would add text on the left margin, add an image, and then flush to the middle or right. This makes the page appear too messy because the text is not organized. It is imperative to choose only one alignment and use it throughout the entire page. The safest alignment to choose would be center since it makes everything symmetrical.

The principle of proximity is choosing what two items should relate on the web page. These two items are to be placed near each other to let the audience know that they are related. However, the web designer must make sure that the items are appropriate for one another. For example, the title “Dinosaurs” should be closer to “Tyrannosaurus Rex” than “Cheetah.” As a web designer, one must know his/her material and what elements that material are related

Repetition is important to make each page of a web page look like it belongs to the same person, company or site. The same colors and layout should be used all throughout the web site. This help the viewer know his/her way around the website without having to learn a new concept on every page.

Contrast helps catch and keep the viewer’s attention. A change in the font, for example may make one thing stand out more than another. However, contrast is not necessary when continuous text is being presented, such as a novel or article. A contrast in continuous text would interrupt the viewers reading.

The use of color is one of the most important elements in web designing. Some people are afraid of using color schemes that they have seen before. However, there have not been color schemes that have not been used. Therefore, one should use any color scheme that they feel will parallel with their site. Hence, the colors chosen should give the site an overall feeling or personality where the site’s images have predominantly the same colors as the site.

Reading Basic Design Principles allow me to critique my own web page. I have to adjust the alignment of my page again because my texts are not all lined up together. Additionally, the colors that I have chosen does not set the mood for my paper. However, I did do a good job at proximity and repetition. It is not difficult to determine what items are related o my web page. Additionally, the same colors are used and the navigation buttons remain in the same area as the one on the previous page. All in all, my web page is going very well but after reading Basic Design Principles, it can be improved a great deal.

Compare/Contrast Journal4

The difference between the two trailers for the film Pride and Prejudice mostly lie in the targeted audience for each film. In the First trailer, Elizabeth and her sisters are arguably of Indian descent that appears to be around their teenage years. While in the second trailer Elizabeth and her siblings appear to be English and look to be more in their twenties rather than teens. Additionally, the first trailer use modern celebrities that the younger generation would recognize. On the contrary, the younger generation would least likely recognize the actors in the second trailer. Moreover, the conflict of one trailer parallel with a problem that a teen, especially of Indian descent, would have. Spouses are usually chosen for girls of the Indian culture by their parents. The trailer states, “The story of one girl’s search for love between her first choice, her last choice and her mother’s choice.” However, the conflict of the second trailer is similar to that of an older woman. Older woman may consider marrying a man who they may not show affection towards but are content with their finances. “ In an era where marrying a rich man was the most a woman could hope for… the story of a modern woman who discover the one person she cannot stand is the one man she may not be able to resist.” The use of the words girl and woman clearly distinct the two trailers targeted audience age range.

The story line of the first trailer greatly differs from that of the second trailer. The first trailer seems to be more of a comedy genre while the second lean more towards a romantic genre. The first trailer shows a bevy of scenes that are suppose to make the audience laugh. For instance, belly dancing is supposed to be an exotic dance. The irony of the woman belly dancing wildly and throwing herself on the floor is used to make the audience laugh. The second trailer reveals more moments of serious and intimate moments. There are moments where Elizabeth and Darcy are chewing one another out. However, there is that one clip at the end of the trailer where Darcy and Elizabeth are about to kissing in the sunlight. Frankly, the second trailer puts more emphasis on Darcy which enforces the love genre while the first trailer focuses more on Elizabeth and her struggle to make a decision.

Additional differences in the two trailers include the colors used. The first trailer consisted of a variety of bright colored dresses worn by the woman characters. This is relevant to the culture being portrayed in the film. In addition since the targeted audience is a young generation, the use of bright colors helps keep the young audiences attention. Contrarily, colors used in the second trailer serve more to parallel the setting of the film rather than the audience. The targeted audience, older woman, tend to show interest in romance stories regardless of colors used.

Essays

Trask's Tourist, Stay Home essay consist more of an furious tone than Knier's essay. Trask is personally offended, therefore his essay consist more emotions than that of Knier's. Trask's wants to get the attention of American tourists who view Hawaii the way that America want Hawaii to be viewed. Throughout his essay He wants them to know that Hawaiians are not content with the way America portray them to the rest of the world. Trask's writes his essay to inform tourists on how Hawaiians feel about Americans taking over their land. In his essay, Trask continuously speak directly about America and the effect it had on Hawaii. He also mention Hawaii as his native land. This enforce the idea that he is speaking to Americans and is trying to inform American tourist of the way some Hawaiians view them.

comic strip/little dad

With no visuals, Spiegelman’s comic strip would have been harder to understand. It would be able problem recognizing who is speaking or who is saying what. It seems as if the shaded characters are the masses. In other words, these are the ordinary people. I wouldn’t say they are middle class individuals, rather working class elderly. The characters not shaded look to be the middle class group of younger individuals. Evidently, all of them are Jews.

The images parallels with the text in the sense that the characters speaking have their own voices but the father is still the individual telling the story. In addition, the bubbles the illustrator used to enclose the text goes hand in hand with the dark gloomy theme of the comic. In each scene, there are more shaded areas than there are bright areas. This is symbolic to the time of the tragic events that the father is speaking about.

The visuals serve as the father’s flashback. As he is telling the story, the illustrator gives us visuals of what is happening. I conclude that the father is one of the characters who speak of fleeing. He could not possibly be one of the shaded characters who I assume to be all elderly. I do not assume him to be any of the generals either.

It is ironic that the father is the individual riding the bike while the son is smoking a cigarette. This all goes back to the shaded elderly characters and not shaded young characters. Based on the shaded characters reactions, the elderly were to be disposed of when they are sent to the stadium. The father gives the impression that he is afraid of getting old in fear of suffering the same fate that was to be of the elders in his flashback. He utilizes the bike as a means of remaining young.

Fresh Prince

A family of sophisticated individuals with the men dressing in a suits and ties and the woman dressing in sophisticated dresses. Then there's the individual in the front wearing Jordan sweat clothes and a huge chain. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air is my fovorite television show. The picture distinctively present the difference between Will and the rest of the family. Will is a young kid who most obviously grew up in an urban community. His image in this picture suits the stereotype for the way urban individuals tend to dress. On the other hand, it is evident that Will's family is from a suburban community.

If the show was to be turned into a book, it would very well be just as power ful as the television series. The concept of the show itself is very powerful. For a young urban kid from the streets of west Philedelphia to come to a rich neighborhood and fit in is not an easy task. Will was accustomed to jeans, loud music, and tilted hats. However, throughout the seasons of the sitcom, we begin to see how the family has influenced Will and how Will influenced the family.

As a book, The Fresh Prince would most likely win some awards. Although it would not be as explicit, I think it would be a book in the calibur of Anderson's Code of the Streets. To me, it would go down as one of the greatest written books in history, depending on the author. However, I doubt that the book would be as funny as the television show. Written words can't reenact the hysterical comedy of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air.

Journal one

I am a basketball player who also draws. Therefore, a drawing of Kobe Bryant playing basketball represents my athletic side and my creative nature. Although my talents do not compare to that of Kobe’s, I am working on becoming a better all around player. The resemblance between the drawing and the real person is the first thing that catches my eye when I look at this picture. It’s amazing how the artist captured Kobe’s physical features from his long pointy nose to his high cheek bones.

In this picture, it is obvious that Kobe is going up for a dunk. Notice how the artist captures Kobe’s movements and acrobatic position. It gives those who don’t know Kobe what type of player he is. Not in a sense of personality but rather his playing style; an over the top, agile, and athletic player. I observe the way that Kobe and other great players play and try to mimic some of their playing styles. However, I play closest to the style of Kobe’s. However as stated earlier, I am no where near as great as him.

As far as drawing, I also tend to draw my characters in motion. However, as the artist did with the portrait of Kobe in the backdrop, I like to draw a portrait of my characters standing still as well. On the contrary, I usually draw the two separately. I draw the characters in a still motion as my way of an introduction. Their motions give the audience a little insight about the character.
