More Than a Game

The Monopoly Man has been a symbol of business and wealth since invented by Charles B. Darrow in 1935. With his top hat, old white mustache, and round body, the Monopoly Man parallel’s the stereotype of what a wealthy individual resembled during the early 1900s. He is often seen in a car, which was a tool for the rich when the game was first invented. Monopoly has served as more the board game that has been the eponymy of fun passed down from generations to generations. It teaches players certain elements of the business world and possible ways one can get wealthy or lose money.
As the best selling board game in the world, Monopoly is sold in 103 countries and produced in 37 languages, according to Hasbro.com. Additionally, an estimated 500 million people have played Monopoly.
Though Charles Darrow is often accredited with the invention of Monopoly, there have been many debates on who should really be given credit to this genius board game. “…its(Monopoly’s) origins actually go back to when Lizzie Magie, patented 748,626 (US) issued January 5, 1904, a game called ‘The Landlord's Game’ with the object of demonstrating how rents enrich property owners and impoverish tenants” (Ideafinder.com). Though Magie’s game was patented and later published by the Economic Game Company of New York, many board games that resembled Magie’s were later produced, including Darrow’s Monopoly. Hence, the inventor for the Monopoly remains a debate.
Today, Monopoly is the most influential board game in world as well as famous. There are many different versions of the game based on Movie’s (Pirates of the Caribbean) and Cartoons (Family Guy). Recently a new version of the game was created in order to fit the modern decade. Although the classic pieces, the car, cowboy, iron shoe, wheelbarrow, top hat, thimble, cannon, battleship, will remain present, the new pieces will consist of popular products of the present.

Monopoly’s education on finance
~Monopoly was created around the time of the Great Depression. Hence, the game depicts the Dos and Don’ts of financing.
• In the latter stages of Monopoly, you lose money when it's your turn. You make money when it's the other player's turn.
o You invest in a property and a few hotels. It's your opponent's turn. They land on your property and suddenly owe you money. That's the way you have to make it work in the real world…capital work for you (Monopoly man.com).
 A lot of patience is required
• Build a portfolio of cheaper properties, which will give a better return on your investment (Monopoly-man.com).
o Early in the game of Monopoly, you don't have an abundance of money. So you have to be smart about your investments. The best strategy is to buy up as many cheap investments as possible. This allows you to diversify (Monopoly-man.com).

New Editions of Monopoly.
~Hasbro and Parker Brothers release new and modern editions of Monopoly to heighten the games fun factor, make the pieces more appealing to the popular culture, and advertise the products.
• “The branded tokens are part of a reinvention of Monopoly that Hasbro executives hope will offer consumers modernized references more relevant to them than the elements of the game that date to the Great Depression” (Price).
• “Five of the eight tokens in the new Monopoly Here and Now edition will be branded, offering game players the chance to be represented by miniature versions of a Toyota Prius hybrid car, an order of McDonald’s French fries, a New Balance running shoe, a cup of Starbucks coffee or a Motorola Razr cell phone” (Elliot).
o “The new tokens are indicative of a marketing trend known as branded entertainment, in which products are woven into the contents of popular culture including the plots of movies, television shows and novels; song lyrics; and video games” (Elliot).
 Rather than using materials popular gadgets and electronics, the tokens should consist of tools that are in relation to the economy
• Chart/Graph, Laptop, money, or logos of the most prestige corporations in the economy

Monopoly allows its players to enjoy themselves while educating them on certain elements of financing and real estate, thus, making it the most popular and successful board game in the world. With the success that Monopoly has had, major corporations such as McDonalds and Motorola have decided to advertise their products through the board game. Nonetheless, the Monopoly is a monopoly within itself. It is a huge money making opportunity. Thus, there are debates on who can claim the rights for the games invention and what corporations are able to advertise through the game. Overall, it is imperative to keep the fun factor in Monopoly as a game rather than exploiting the game as a means for major corporations' to gain profit.

Material World

One can't help but think that a kid who spends most of his time online playing video games is wasting his life. Hence, when an adult married man spends his time playing online games, one must question his ability to sustain his marriage. According to Hall, Second Life is a game that allow a person to escape the harsh reality of the real world and live a more friendly and controllable virtual life. The notion of living a in a virtual world is mentally and physically unhealthy. It is agreeable that it is healthy to escape the real world into one's own fantasy world sometimes. However, living in that fantasy world for 30 hours a week is absurd. That is almost as much time as the average adult spends working a week. Thus, if an adult spends 40+ hours a week working and 30 hours a week in an online game, he or she has little time for rest, a social life, and most importantly his/her family. When an individual allow a game to deprive them of sleep, he/she is dwindling his or her mental and physical capacity.
Haas makes a good point when she states that computers' transformation of communication means a transformation, or a revolutionizing, of culture. Technology has, indeed, revolutionized culture, especially when it comes to writing. Phones allow people to text message one another rather than speaking verbally. Text messaging can be used as a way to enhance one's writing skills. However, since texting is more popular in the younger generation rather than the old, writing and speaking have been revolutionized into a bevy of abbreviations, acronyms, and code words. It is safe to agree with Haas's philosophy that writing is technology. Technology can be defined as tools used by humans that aid them in ameliorating life. Hence, even ancient civilizations created or used tools to communicate and write, whether carving sculptures, drawing or writing in the sand with a stick or using rocks to make symbols.
Raschke is correct about technology enhancing knowledge. However, technology plays a huge role in reducing some of the American society's decline of knowledge. Technology presents so much entertainment that all kids want to do is watch television or play games rather than read a book or do homework. As demonstrated in Halls piece, even a married adult can't help but fall for the entertainments and amusements offered by technology.
Our use of computers in ENC 1101 has enhanced my learning rather than hindering. With the ability to view images and videos on the spot, the class is not left to wander what the professor intends when she speaks of a particular piece. Additionally, when critically analyzing an image, every student is able to pull the image from his or her own computer, which prevents commotions and setbacks. With the use of computers, I can research any concept in which I am skeptical immediately rather than going through a series of books or word of mouth. The use of technology will continue to enhance knowledge, as long as individuals have enough poise to use it for learning rather than games and amusement all the time.

Who am I? What am I? I look in the mirror yet my reflection conceals itself from me. When someone asks me to tell them something interesting or unique about myself, I become a deer caught in the headlights. Last week, I spotted an attractive young lady on the other side of the dance at Club Static. I smoothly made my way towards her, with my eyes on her the whole time. When she noticed me walking towards her, we exchanged a faint smile. I walked up to her and asked for her name. She responded Lisa. She later began to tell about herself, her likes, dislikes, favorites and a bevy of information about herself. When she finished she asked me something the one thing that I dreaded, "tell me a little about herself?" I was dumbfounded. My confidence dropped severely and I began stuttering. All I could tell her was my name, again, and basic information that you can find on my birth certificate. My sudden lack of confidence became very evident and I could sense her being turned off. She stared deeply into my eyes and said, "You seem to not know who you are and where you come from. I cannot be with a lost soul. When Patrick Taylor is ready to come out and spill his insides out to me, then we can talk."
I was, and still am bothered about that situation to this day. Here I stand in my bathroom, staring at the mirror for the past hour and a half, not realizing that I have an appointment in less than thirty minutes. I threw on a Polo shirt and grabbed a strawberry and chocolate bar on my way out. As I make my way towards the elevator, I see Lisa to my surprise. I feel pessimistic as I work my way towards her. Suddenly, I begin to think of the empty mirror that I stood before prior to me stepping out of the door. I filled with a determination not to impress Lisa, but to let her know that I will find my reflection and when I do, I'll never lose it again. I move towards her with my chest out and head high. I began, "Hey my name is Patrick Taylor and I'm a newspaper editor. I enjoy listening to slow music and having intimate conversations with the lights dimmed. I have no favorite food because I pretty much eat anything. I look to be quite an interesting individual so I would like to spend more time with you, learning more as time goes by." I look into her eyes and I notice my reflection in them. She has become a part of me. Some stranger from the club who I decided to speak to played a role in me finding who I am. She snapped out of her surprise and gave me a smile sweeter than the strawberry chocolate candy bar that I held in my hands and said "It's nice to finally meet you Patrick Taylor, I'm Brittany Essence. I too am interested in getting to know. How about we meet up tonight at seven thirty at The CafĂ©. We can call it a date minus the slow music and dimmed lights plus the intimate conversations." She smiled at me and I smiled at her all the way to the main floor and out the door while conversing about our love for strawberries and chocolate. On my way to work, I realized that I too am a part of her as she is a part of me. I reached the doors to my job and thought… this is the beginning of a great day… Then again, this is the beginning of my life.

The images posted reveal that Patrick is an invisible man that eventually found himself when he is able to reveal who he is to Britanny and realize that they are one of a kind. Although he had the confidence to go up and speak to Lisa/Britanny, he was not able to tell Britanny much about himself, therefore, making him a very hollow man. He did, indeed, have an identity. However, he does not know how to call forth this idenity and express himself or as Lisa stated, "spill his insides out." In similarity to Hughes poem, Hughes also seemed lost as to how to express himself. However, as he outlines his day and speaks on his likes and dislikes, he comes to the conclusion that everyone, no matter what race he/she belongs to, are alike.

Journal 6

On the index page of my portfolio, I try to present pictures of individuals who I admire and pictures that attract me in a way that tells my audience about me. I used basic, rather than fancy, text in order for my viewers to be able to navigate easily through my portfolio. On each page, there is a different paper. I add pictures that correspond with my each essay to give my viewers an idea on what subject my paper will be touching on. However, I don’t believe I have done a very great job at organizing my text in a way that my viewers will easily understand what is going on. Additionally, my navigation keys are not well presented. I need to make the font bigger and put the letters in bold or underline them. Moreover, I have not done a very good job at using headings which is another reason why my e portfolio will confuse my audience.
In the beginning, I was wondering why we couldn’t just create a standard portfolio including a binder full of the essays that we have written. However, I realized that an e-portfolio is more efficient. It is easier to access and navigate. When going for a job interview, having an e-portfolio will probably be an advantage. It saves the employer time by not having to flip through an abundant amount of papers. In addition, it shows that you have some skills in web designing which can open additional opportunities for you the facility you are looking to work. Many people are now going green, meaning that they are trying to preserve trees by using less paper. Showing up with an e-portfolio reveals that you are reluctant to use paper as well, giving you and the employer something in common, which is also an advantage.

Web design principles

One does not need a degree in web designing to design a web. Following the four basic principles of web design, alignment, proximity, repetition and contrast can help an individual design a web page that is comprehendible by his/her audience. The four principles of web design helps to provide a professional and clean appearance to a web page. The audience will be able to identify the web page’s purpose and navigate through the page more conveniently.

Alignment is the biggest problem when it comes to web design. Most people try to make their web page look different by adding text or images all over their page. They would add text on the left margin, add an image, and then flush to the middle or right. This makes the page appear too messy because the text is not organized. It is imperative to choose only one alignment and use it throughout the entire page. The safest alignment to choose would be center since it makes everything symmetrical.

The principle of proximity is choosing what two items should relate on the web page. These two items are to be placed near each other to let the audience know that they are related. However, the web designer must make sure that the items are appropriate for one another. For example, the title “Dinosaurs” should be closer to “Tyrannosaurus Rex” than “Cheetah.” As a web designer, one must know his/her material and what elements that material are related

Repetition is important to make each page of a web page look like it belongs to the same person, company or site. The same colors and layout should be used all throughout the web site. This help the viewer know his/her way around the website without having to learn a new concept on every page.

Contrast helps catch and keep the viewer’s attention. A change in the font, for example may make one thing stand out more than another. However, contrast is not necessary when continuous text is being presented, such as a novel or article. A contrast in continuous text would interrupt the viewers reading.

The use of color is one of the most important elements in web designing. Some people are afraid of using color schemes that they have seen before. However, there have not been color schemes that have not been used. Therefore, one should use any color scheme that they feel will parallel with their site. Hence, the colors chosen should give the site an overall feeling or personality where the site’s images have predominantly the same colors as the site.

Reading Basic Design Principles allow me to critique my own web page. I have to adjust the alignment of my page again because my texts are not all lined up together. Additionally, the colors that I have chosen does not set the mood for my paper. However, I did do a good job at proximity and repetition. It is not difficult to determine what items are related o my web page. Additionally, the same colors are used and the navigation buttons remain in the same area as the one on the previous page. All in all, my web page is going very well but after reading Basic Design Principles, it can be improved a great deal.

Compare/Contrast Journal4

The difference between the two trailers for the film Pride and Prejudice mostly lie in the targeted audience for each film. In the First trailer, Elizabeth and her sisters are arguably of Indian descent that appears to be around their teenage years. While in the second trailer Elizabeth and her siblings appear to be English and look to be more in their twenties rather than teens. Additionally, the first trailer use modern celebrities that the younger generation would recognize. On the contrary, the younger generation would least likely recognize the actors in the second trailer. Moreover, the conflict of one trailer parallel with a problem that a teen, especially of Indian descent, would have. Spouses are usually chosen for girls of the Indian culture by their parents. The trailer states, “The story of one girl’s search for love between her first choice, her last choice and her mother’s choice.” However, the conflict of the second trailer is similar to that of an older woman. Older woman may consider marrying a man who they may not show affection towards but are content with their finances. “ In an era where marrying a rich man was the most a woman could hope for… the story of a modern woman who discover the one person she cannot stand is the one man she may not be able to resist.” The use of the words girl and woman clearly distinct the two trailers targeted audience age range.

The story line of the first trailer greatly differs from that of the second trailer. The first trailer seems to be more of a comedy genre while the second lean more towards a romantic genre. The first trailer shows a bevy of scenes that are suppose to make the audience laugh. For instance, belly dancing is supposed to be an exotic dance. The irony of the woman belly dancing wildly and throwing herself on the floor is used to make the audience laugh. The second trailer reveals more moments of serious and intimate moments. There are moments where Elizabeth and Darcy are chewing one another out. However, there is that one clip at the end of the trailer where Darcy and Elizabeth are about to kissing in the sunlight. Frankly, the second trailer puts more emphasis on Darcy which enforces the love genre while the first trailer focuses more on Elizabeth and her struggle to make a decision.

Additional differences in the two trailers include the colors used. The first trailer consisted of a variety of bright colored dresses worn by the woman characters. This is relevant to the culture being portrayed in the film. In addition since the targeted audience is a young generation, the use of bright colors helps keep the young audiences attention. Contrarily, colors used in the second trailer serve more to parallel the setting of the film rather than the audience. The targeted audience, older woman, tend to show interest in romance stories regardless of colors used.

Essays

Trask's Tourist, Stay Home essay consist more of an furious tone than Knier's essay. Trask is personally offended, therefore his essay consist more emotions than that of Knier's. Trask's wants to get the attention of American tourists who view Hawaii the way that America want Hawaii to be viewed. Throughout his essay He wants them to know that Hawaiians are not content with the way America portray them to the rest of the world. Trask's writes his essay to inform tourists on how Hawaiians feel about Americans taking over their land. In his essay, Trask continuously speak directly about America and the effect it had on Hawaii. He also mention Hawaii as his native land. This enforce the idea that he is speaking to Americans and is trying to inform American tourist of the way some Hawaiians view them.

comic strip/little dad

With no visuals, Spiegelman’s comic strip would have been harder to understand. It would be able problem recognizing who is speaking or who is saying what. It seems as if the shaded characters are the masses. In other words, these are the ordinary people. I wouldn’t say they are middle class individuals, rather working class elderly. The characters not shaded look to be the middle class group of younger individuals. Evidently, all of them are Jews.

The images parallels with the text in the sense that the characters speaking have their own voices but the father is still the individual telling the story. In addition, the bubbles the illustrator used to enclose the text goes hand in hand with the dark gloomy theme of the comic. In each scene, there are more shaded areas than there are bright areas. This is symbolic to the time of the tragic events that the father is speaking about.

The visuals serve as the father’s flashback. As he is telling the story, the illustrator gives us visuals of what is happening. I conclude that the father is one of the characters who speak of fleeing. He could not possibly be one of the shaded characters who I assume to be all elderly. I do not assume him to be any of the generals either.

It is ironic that the father is the individual riding the bike while the son is smoking a cigarette. This all goes back to the shaded elderly characters and not shaded young characters. Based on the shaded characters reactions, the elderly were to be disposed of when they are sent to the stadium. The father gives the impression that he is afraid of getting old in fear of suffering the same fate that was to be of the elders in his flashback. He utilizes the bike as a means of remaining young.
